HOLY WEEK AND EASTER AT ST. GEORGE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH


The observance of Holy Week at St. George’s Episcopal Church at 2425 S. Germantown Road will include the Maundy Thursday choral liturgy at 7:00 p.m. with foot washing for those who wish to participate and the stripping of the Altar.  Friday’s observances will include The Good Friday liturgy, a solemn recounting of the Passion of Christ, at 12 noon and again at 7:00 p.m. (choral) and the Stations of the Cross at 3 pm featuring a meditation at each of the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Easter Day will begin with The Service of Light (sunrise) at 6:30 a.m. at the outdoor chapel, weather permitting, and begins with the kindling of a fire in the darkness. The Paschal Candle is then lit from the newly kindled fire. Andrew Proctor, cantor, will sing the ancient phrases of the Exsultet as the sun rises and illuminates the Easter Day; the service concludes with Holy Eucharist. The Easter Festival Choral Eucharists at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. have special music led by the Coventry Choir, organ and the Sanctifica Wind Ensemble. The church, which has been solemn, with crosses and all adornments draped during the penitential season of Lent, will burst forth with joyous music and colorful flowers to proclaim Alleluia to the risen Lord.

April 17, 2017 (Memphis, Tenn.) Today the times that Early Voting locations in the Special Election Primary are open for the House District 95 th House of Representatives seat will change. The two locations, one in Germantown at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and the other in Collierville at the Collierville Church of Christ, will be open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tennessee law requires early voting to take place for a minimum of three hours with some evening hours. In the first week of early voting the polls were open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We wanted a variety of hours so that people could vote regardless of their work schedule.” said Linda Phillips, administrator of elections for the Shelby County Election Commission (SCEC). This election affects a relatively small group of voters, (51,412 of whom 46,597 are active), so SCEC officials decided to open the two early voting precincts in the 95 th district for fewer hours than would be used in a county-wide election.   ...

Suburban Garden Club hosts second biannual flower show

By Rebekah Yearout The Germantown News  The Suburban Garden Club of Germantown’s biannual flower show, this year titled “Horse and Garden: The Flora and Fauna of Germantown, Tennessee” was held April 26 at the Germantown Country Club.  The show exhibited hundreds of designs, all created by SGC members. Many of the designs incorporated equestrian elements in keeping with the show’s theme, which flower show chair Elaine Hare said was an integral part of Germantown’s history.  See the entire story and additional photos in the May 3 edition of the Germantown News, out today.  The “Run for the Roses” display (Division II: Horticulture) at the Suburban Garden Club’s biannual flower show last Wednesday featured flowering shrubs and tree branches, such as dogwood, hydrangea, magnolia, flowering cherry, lilac and, of course, a variety of roses. / Photo by Rebekah Yearout
