City to begin Streetscape work later this year

By Rebekah Yearout The Germantown News  The City of Germantown soon will start work on the Streetscape project, which focuses on the Central Business District and Old Germantown.  A “streetscape” is an area defined by certain logistic and decorative additions to a typical city street, such as medians, ornamental lighting, outside furnishings (such as benches and garbage cans), landscape planters, broad sidewalks, on-street parking, bicycle lanes, narrow traffic lanes, textured turn lanes and street presence from buildings.  Director of Community and Economic Development Cameron Ross said the city held multiple public meetings last summer to get residents’ input on what they would like to see done as far as improvements to the CBD (at the intersection of Poplar Avenue and Germantown Road) and Old Germantown. Working with designers and traffic experts who looked at the needs of each particular district, the city put a plan into place for both areas.  For the full

TN education commissioner visits Farmington during statewide tour

By Rebekah Yearout The Germantown News  Tennessee Education Commissioner Candice McQueen visited Farmington Elementary last Tuesday as part of her Classroom Chronicles tour, which heavily focuses on the new statewide Read to be Ready initiative.  Read to be Ready is a plan the state adopted to ensure students are reading at a proficient level by the time they are exiting third grade. According to the state education department, only 43 percent of Tennessee students are reading at a proficient level at the end of third grade.  McQueen also said Tennessee just recently submitted its new federal plan—a revised version of No Child Left Behind—called ESA, and said they will be implementing that plan July 1.  “So I encourage you to get to know as much about the new school accountability model and the line back to district accountability,” McQueen said.  For the full story, see the April 19 edition of the Germantown News, on racks today.  Megan Gaschler talks w

Expand Your Tactics This Spring

I love fishing this time of year! You can use just about any method and catch fish, and finding them isn't that hard. However, catching quality bass consistently can be a challenge. The beauty of spring is that you can find bass in the pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn for the next several weeks locally. Most bass are shallow and pretty aggressive right now. Just pick the technique you like to fish and get after them.                                                                                      For the full story please see the April 19 edition of Germantown News.
