Fort Germantown seeks volunteers for Park Day

On Saturday, April 1, 2017, history buffs, community leaders and the R. E. Lee Camp S C V of Germantown will team up with the Civil War Trust at more than 130 sites in 30 states to answer the call to service on Park Day. Celebrating over 20 successful years, Park Day has attracted volunteers of all ages and abilities bound by their dedication to serving their communities at historic sites nationwide.

In Germantown the R E Lee Camp will host a Park Day event beginning at 9:00 a.m. Needs range from marker cleaning to brush removal. Refreshments will be provided free of charge thanks to Jody's Donuts & Bakery of 420 Germantown Pkwy.  A local historian will also be available to describe the park’s significance. The R. E. Lee Camp S C V is a nonprofit historical and educational organization dedicated to preserving the history of the War of Northern Aggression in our community and Germantown, Tenn.


The Civil War Trust is the largest and most effective nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation of America’s hallowed battlegrounds.   To date, the Trust has preserved close to 45,000 acres of battlefield land in 23 states.  Learn more at Civilwar.org.

April 17, 2017 (Memphis, Tenn.) Today the times that Early Voting locations in the Special Election Primary are open for the House District 95 th House of Representatives seat will change. The two locations, one in Germantown at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and the other in Collierville at the Collierville Church of Christ, will be open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tennessee law requires early voting to take place for a minimum of three hours with some evening hours. In the first week of early voting the polls were open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We wanted a variety of hours so that people could vote regardless of their work schedule.” said Linda Phillips, administrator of elections for the Shelby County Election Commission (SCEC). Suburban Garden Club hosts second biannual flower show

By Rebekah Yearout The Germantown News  The Suburban Garden Club of Germantown’s biannual flower show, this year titled “Horse and Garden: The Flora and Fauna of Germantown, Tennessee” was held April 26 at the Germantown Country Club.  The show exhibited hundreds of designs, all created by SGC members. Many of the designs incorporated equestrian elements in keeping with the show’s theme, which flower show chair Elaine Hare said was an integral part of Germantown’s history.  See the entire story and additional photos in the May 3 edition of the Germantown News, out today.  The “Run for the Roses” display (Division II: Horticulture) at the Suburban Garden Club’s biannual flower show last Wednesday featured flowering shrubs and tree branches, such as dogwood, hydrangea, magnolia, flowering cherry, lilac and, of course, a variety of roses. / Photo by Rebekah Yearout
