State leaders urge adults, schools to watch youth mental health

In a joint video statement issued this week, Gov. Bill Haslam, Tennessee Education Commissioner Candice McQueen and Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Commissioner Marie Williams urged adults and schools to stay vigilant of children’s mental health.

While May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, May 4 is specifically set aside as National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. Haslam said kids today face lots of issues that can affect their mental health, ranging from domestic violence to bullying.

EARLY VOTING HOURS CHANGE FOR 95th SPECIAL ELECTION PRIMARY

April 17, 2017 (Memphis, Tenn.) Today the times that Early Voting locations in the Special Election Primary are open for the House District 95 th House of Representatives seat will change. The two locations, one in Germantown at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and the other in Collierville at the Collierville Church of Christ, will be open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tennessee law requires early voting to take place for a minimum of three hours with some evening hours. In the first week of early voting the polls were open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We wanted a variety of hours so that people could vote regardless of their work schedule.” said Linda Phillips, administrator of elections for the Shelby County Election Commission (SCEC). This election affects a relatively small group of voters, (51,412 of whom 46,597 are active), so SCEC officials decided to open the two early voting precincts in the 95 th district for fewer hours than would be used in a county-wide election. ...

Past presidents of Suburban Garden Club prepare Club for upcoming flower show

“Horse and Garden” The Flora and Fauna of Germantown, Tennessee The Suburban Garden Club held its March meeting at the Memphis Botanic Garden to accommodate the large number of designs and arrangements that were used as correct examples for the club’s flower show on Wednesday, April 26, 2017. The show will be held at the Germantown Country Club from one to four in the afternoon. It is free and open to the public. Barbara Armstrong, Nancy Klepper and Lucy Wilkinson created and provided the designs for the flower show demonstrations entitled “Alignment, Cadence, and Conformation.” Suburban members appreciated the clever terminology for the class as being perfect for an equestrian-themed flower show. They instructed the members on the major Divisions of Design beginning with floor arrangements that must be at least five feet tall to hanging miniature designs that cannot be more than five inches high.
